How deeply rooted are you?

Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

How deeply rooted are you?

I add  seeds to my 1.5-liter water bottle to obtain the fibre, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients they provide as part of my healthy eating regimen. I didn't finish my bottle of Chia water one Friday afternoon. We have a little Indian fig and jade plant in the office, so I took the leftover Chia water and poured it into the pot plants as I was getting ready to leave the workplace.

When we returned on Monday morning, the soil surrounding the Indian fig and jade plants was covered in growing Chia plants. My colleagues and I were surprised and started to engage on the subject. Though we were interested in seeing the growth of the Chia plants, I couldn't help but think of something important that God had shown to me in the book Matthew 13:1–9.

The Parable of the Sower

My focus is on verses 5 and 6, Some fell in rocky places where there was not much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

According to the Bible, our Chia plants had no roots, which is why they only lived for a week before withering. Rather than being underneath the soil, the seeds were above it. There was no protection or covering for the roots.

Lesson from the Chia plant

I started asking myself the question of how deeply rooted I am in God, in the word, and in my relationship with the Holy Spirit as a Christian. The Bible says in the book of Psalms 1:2 and 3

2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season. and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

In the Chia plant scenario, the sun scorched the plant and the plants all withered, but the jade and Indian fig remained, and they continue to flourish because of their deep roots. The strength of the Jade Indian fig is strong, and in times of adversity, the plants did not fail. Get rooted in the Word of God and in God himself. Build yourself up in your most holy faith, so that you may be strong and have good courage.

  1. Thank you for this beautiful word. What I like about being rooted is that it doesn't matter how much you bend during the storm...but when stillness returns, you remain rooted like there was never a storm.
