Propagation part 1: Be fruitful and multiply

Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so.

Genesis 1 verse 11

From the above scripture, we can see that God has already started fulfilling his word or promise of provision which he made in the book of Phil 4 verse 19, my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Today may I please speak of one of the things I find amazing and enjoy doing in my garden, propagation which is the process of breeding a specimen of a plant by   natural process from the parent stock through cuttings. The reason I love this process so much is because the plants that grow this way mature faster and flower sooner than plants grown from seeds.

I have grown Rosemary, Sage, Lavender, Thyme, Basil, and Oregano through cuttings, and now I am trying Parsley. I will let you know how that turns out in weeks to come. I prefer to do this in the growing season of that particular plant to aid in the process of developing the roots faster, or at the end of the season to grow the plant indoors for the winter.

I cut a small stem from the plant and remove all the leaves below and live a few leaves on top, pour clean water in a clean glass until half full, and place my cuttings in the water. Make sure that the leaves don’t touch the water, the only thing in the water is the stem (see the above picture). Change the water in the glass weekly to ensure that the plant does not rot. In two to three weeks or more the cuttings start developing roots. I allow the cuttings to grow enough roots then plant the plant in a small container with potting soil or plant directly to my garden and enjoy watching them grow. You can aid the process by adding hormone rooting powder, the powder helps the plant develop roots faster, but some plants like Basil, Rosemary, and Oregano do just fine without the powder.

Through the above process, an abundance in your garden is your portion, which reminds me of a scripture in the bible that says be fruitful and multiply. Multiplying your plants in the garden is easy through growing plants from cuttings. As spring approaches hope you will give the above method a try, it worked wonders for me, it’s like when Jesus fed multitudes with only five loaves and two fish. Enjoy!
